If you’re planning a trip to Ivory Coast, it’s essential to know which vaccines you need before you go. Whether you’re traveling for vacation, business, or a humanitarian mission, the yellow fever vaccine is mandatory for entry. Other vaccines are strongly recommended for your personal safety—keep reading to find out which ones!
Please note: the information on this blog is based on my experience after nearly two years living in Ivory Coast and should not replace official guidance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mandatory Vaccine: Yellow Fever

The yellow fever vaccine is required to enter Ivory Coast. Upon arrival at the airport, authorities will ask to see your International Certificate of Vaccination.
- When to get vaccinated? Ideally at least 10 days before departure to ensure immunity.
- Validity: The vaccine is valid for life. One dose is sufficient in most cases, according to international guidelines.
- Where to get vaccinated? At an approved center, usually located in hospitals or travel health clinics.
Without this vaccine, airport authorities may deny boarding or entry into Ivory Coast. That’s why the yellow fever vaccine is essential for trip preparation. Make sure to get vaccinated in advance and keep your International Vaccination Certificate handy.
Recommended Vaccines for Traveling to Ivory Coast

Even if these vaccines are not mandatory, they are strongly recommended to reduce the risk of contracting certain diseases during your stay in Ivory Coast. The climate conditions, proximity to nature, and the presence of tropical vectors can expose travelers to various infections. Therefore, it is essential to protect yourself in advance by consulting a healthcare professional.
Hepatitis A Vaccine
Hepatitis A is mainly transmitted through contaminated water or food, which can occur in environments where hygiene standards are not strictly enforced.
The risk of infection increases significantly if you eat street food or visit rural areas where access to clean drinking water and strict food hygiene may be limited.
Hepatitis B Vaccine

Hepatitis B is transmitted through direct contact with blood or through sexual intercourse. Therefore, travelers on long-term assignments, internships, or V.I.E programs are particularly advised to take this precaution.
Typhoid Vaccine
Typhoid fever is transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water or food, making exposure more likely in areas where sanitation infrastructure is limited.
As a result, travelers who plan to eat local food, explore villages, or take part in field missions face a higher risk. For this reason, getting vaccinated beforehand is an important step to strengthen your health protection throughout your stay.
Rabies Vaccine (Depending on Your Type of Trip)
The rabies vaccine is recommended for travelers who may come into contact with animals that can transmit the virus, such as stray dogs, bats, or certain monkeys. These situations are more likely during extended stays, outdoor activities, or visits to natural areas like Taï National Park.
In regions where access to medical care is limited, preventive vaccination is considered by health professionals as an essential precaution, providing better protection in case of a bite or scratch.

Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine
The meningococcal meningitis vaccine is especially recommended during the dry season, from December to June, when the risk of infection increases. Heat and dust favor the transmission of the bacteria.
People staying for long periods in Ivory Coast, particularly in the northern regions, are more exposed. Vaccination is strongly advised for those on humanitarian missions, internships, or professional activities in rural areas.
Malaria Risk in Ivory Coast: Prevention and Protection Tips

Malaria (also known as paludism) is present throughout Ivory Coast year-round. Since there is no vaccine, travelers may follow an antimalarial prophylaxis, usually in the form of pills taken before and during the trip. Some travelers choose not to take medication due to its strength, but if you do, make sure to use mosquito repellent.
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for the right medication.
