Tourism in Grand-Lahou: Must-Do Activities

1. Discover the Old Town of Grand-Lahou

The old town of Grand-Lahou, also known as Lahou-Kpanda, is steeped in history and traditions. During our visit in August 2024, we had the privilege of witnessing the royal succession festival, a major cultural event. The entire town pulsed to the rhythm of drums, traditional dances, and vibrant costumes, offering a unique immersion into Ivorian culture.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a calmer atmosphere, taking time to share in the daily life of local families: watching the preparation and smoking of fish destined for Abidjan’s markets. This authentic experience offers a glimpse into a community living between the sea and the lagoon, deeply connected to its traditions.

Today, the old town of Grand-Lahou faces serious environmental challenges. Coastal erosion and rising sea levels have forced part of the population to rebuild the new town further inland. Yet, the historic settlement remains inhabited: on this narrow strip of sand, residents continue to live between the sea and the lagoon, courageously preserving a centuries-old heritage.

The beach of Grand-Lahou is a fascinating but fragile natural phenomenon. Here, seawater flows back into the lagoon, creating a worrying imbalance. This process accelerates coastal erosion, threatens ecosystems, and endangers homes. In response to this urgent situation, scientists and NGOs are working hand in hand with local communities to understand the phenomenon, propose sustainable solutions, and protect Grand-Lahou from disappearing.

2. Meet the Local Fishermen

Here, fishing is more than just a job—it’s an identity. Sharing a moment with the fishermen and learning about their traditional skills is like diving into the soul of the town.

3. Enjoy Delicious Grilled or Smoked Fish

Hand-smoked in wooden huts by local women or grilled right on the beach, fish is a true culinary institution here. Some is shipped to Abidjan, while the rest is enjoyed locally. The aroma, the flavor, and the atmosphere make this experience absolutely worth it.

4. Take a Boat Ride on the Lagoon or the Bandama River

A boat ride on Tiagba Lagoon offers a unique nature experience in Ivory Coast. As you glide across the water, eco-tourism enthusiasts can enjoy peaceful, authentic landscapes.
Along the lagoon, you’ll admire majestic mangroves and fishing villages lining the shores. Then, Robinson Island, fringed with coconut trees, appears on the horizon. The town of Grand-Lahou and Azagny National Park complete this exceptional panorama.

A trip of 1.5 to 2 hours costs around 20,000 FCFA (approximately €31) and can be negotiated. To extend your visit, you can add a detour to the old town of Grand-Lahou for an additional fee.

5. Discover the Azagny National Park

Azagny National Park is located about 40 km east of Grand-Lahou and spans 22,000 hectares. It is bordered by the Bandama River to the east, the coastal road to the north, and the Azagny Canal to the south. This protected area combines wetlands, savannas, and forests, and is home to several vulnerable mammal species. Since 1981, it has been recognized as a National Park, and in 1996, it was designated a Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance).

To visit Azagny National Park, the presence of an OIPR guide is mandatory. If you combine the visit with your local guide during a boat trip, the walk inside the park will likely be short.

However, if you prefer the full loop hike—a 3-hour trek—you must contact the OIPR directly at +225 22 50 11 37 to organize your visit under the best conditions.

Grand-Lahou, also known as Lahou-Kpanda, is mainly inhabited by the Appolonians, locally called N’zima. This ethnic group belongs to the larger Akan community, present in both Ivory Coast and neighboring Ghana.

The town is also home to many Ghanaians, who have settled here to continue their traditional activity: fishing. To meet family needs, an English-speaking school was established to educate children in their mother tongue. Unlike Ivory Coast, where French is the official language, English dominates in Ghana.

Finally, Grand-Lahou is the birthplace of Awossi, also known as Mapouka, a traditional dance that reflects the region’s deep cultural identity. This artistic expression is a must-see for lovers of cultural tourism.
