Let the Atlantic breeze sweep you away, wander through the Éhotilé Islands National Park, discover the charm of Assinie-Mafia village, and soak up unforgettable sunsets. When it comes to staying over, you’ll find delightful hotels and cosy lodges – perfect for a day trip or a relaxing weekend escape.

How to get to Assinie from Abidjan?
If you choose to drive from Abidjan, the journey time will largely depend on traffic conditions. It’s best to set off no later than 9 a.m. and plan your return before 5 p.m. to avoid heavy congestion. In ideal conditions, the trip takes around 45 minutes. However, when traffic is busy, allow up to two hours – especially during the dry season or holiday periods.
- By taxi or Yango: a one-way trip usually costs between 25,000 FCFA and 30,000 FCFA (around €38 to €46). From Abidjan, finding a ride is fairly easy. However, for the return journey, it’s best to ask your hotel or the venue where you’re spending the day to call a local taxi for you, as Yango often struggles to find drivers in this area.
- Car hire: rental rates generally range from 50,000 to 90,000 FCFA (around €76 to €137) per day, depending on the type of vehicle you choose. Plus, the road from Abidjan is in good condition, making for a comfortable and safe journey.
- By public transport: For an authentic experience, you can opt for the famous Gbakas – those typical Côte d’Ivoire minibuses. They usually depart from Treichville station, but you’ll need a bit of patience: they only leave once the vehicle is full. The fare is around 2,500 FCFA (about €3.80), making it a very budget-friendly option. Don’t expect the comfort of a taxi or an air-conditioned coach, but it’s a true immersion in local life.

Assinie history

Assinie is divided into two villages by the river mouth that separates the lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. On the right lies Assinie-France, the original village of the Essouma people. On the left is Assinie-Mafia, where most hotels are now located.
According to local legend, the name “Mafia” comes from the Ani language and means “hidden.” This name has historical roots: Assinie-France was one of the first areas inhabited by French settlers. After colonization, some indigenous people chose to leave this zone and settle on the other side of the river mouth, in a more secluded area. This new village was then named Assinie-Mafia, referring to its discreet, “hidden” character in the local language
